The corporate video editing process can be broken down into these three distinct stages of post-production.Top image via ShutterstockIn theory, editing corporate video shouldn’t be very hard or time consuming. If you’ve done your planning right, your production should have been tightly scripted and post should come down to laying your footage in to match your carefully constructed storyboard. There may be a few deviations to work through, but overall it’s usually a quicker turnaround than documentary or narrative film editing. In my experience, the most difficult aspect of editing corporate video is dealing with the clients. (Bless their hearts.) If your point of contact is not familiar with the video editing process, it can result in some ridiculous requests and alterations. Hopefully you’re working by the hour and not by the project, but in either case, it’s important to be upfront and limit your work to what is practical to finish a project in a professional and timely manner.Story StageThe Story Stage includes all your pre-production — organizing assets, compiling and reviewing footage, syncing audio and multiple cameras, and laying everything out to edit. In this stage, you simply place the raw story pieces together as an outline of what you’ll work together later. While this layout isn’t sexy to share with clients (and while it may include some blemishes, out-of-focus and awkward shots), it will save both you and your client time later by showing it to them early. While this might be unnatural (or seem unreasonable to show such raw footage) to some, it will help you down the line. It’s not nearly as big of a deal to change the messaging or move around some soundbites early in the process than trying to make the adjustments after you’ve added all your filler and sound/color work.Share your Story Edit to get sign-off on the elements before adding in B-roll, transitions and other tricks and flares. Once you go back and forth and get a lock, only then do you go onto the next stage.Rough StageIn the Rough Stage you’ll tinker to cover your cuts and awkward shots in order to give your video that professional shine. This is where your editing skills and expertise are put into work. You may even be at a level where you can have an assistant or intern do the story edit to the script and you can build it out from the laid-out elements. This is where you make your decisions on takes to use (or which ones to stitch together). You can also begin your process of cutting out blank spaces and awkward pauses as you edit the story down into a tight video set to your music or underscore.Ideally you can lock in every moving part needed (that doesn’t require minor tweaks) to share again with the client. Your goal again is to get picture and sound lock without maxing out render times with heavily corrected footage and audio. This includes rough lower thirds, transitions and full use of editing tricks (J and L cuts, audio replacement, etc…).Final StageThe Final Stage should be the easiest to complete because your video will now be fully signed off for all practical purposes, leaving you free to finally add in color correction and grading, stabilization, lens flares or whatever else is in your arsenal to turn a 7.5 video into a solid 10.You’ll also now be able to do a full export rather than a quick-review cut. You can max out those render qualities and not worry about cluttered hard-drives with too many large-size video versions. To save a little on editing time, be sure to drop down your footage all to the same layer (when in Premiere Pro). You can also do your final audio sweep to de-hum and de-ess as best as possible and add animations to any text, lower thirds or infographics. While we tend to make exceptions for clients here and there to change major story points or soundbites due to unforeseen circumstances, if you’re upfront and push for reviews at these stages, you can drastically improve your workflow — and ultimately your clients will thank you for a more seamless post-production process. What do you view as the stages of post-production? Have any other thoughts to add? Let us know in the comments.

When Michigan State football wide receiver Keith Nichol hauled in quarterback Kirk Cousins’ Hail Mary pass in East Lansing, Mich., on Saturday night, the Wisconsin Badgers’ Bowl Championship Series title hopes may have come to an end. Back in Columbus though, Ohio State football’s hopes of appearing in the inaugural Big Ten championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis may have been revived. While it seems completely improbable, the truth is that the road to Big Ten title game looks like it once again leads through Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes currently stand at 1-2 in Big Ten play, which is merely good for fifth place out of six teams in the Leaders Division. Yet dates with three of the teams they trail — Wisconsin, Purdue and Penn State — still remain on OSU’s schedule. The other team ahead of them is Illinois, whom the Buckeyes upset on Oct. 15 and who now has two conference losses as well. The Badgers and Boilermakers each have one loss in conference play, meaning that if the Buckeyes can defeat both of them, they will each have two losses along with the Buckeyes, with OSU holding the tiebreaker. The wildcard is Penn State, who is undefeated in conference play, but is about to begin a brutal stretch after what was arguably a light start to its conference schedule. The Nittany Lions will host Illinois and Nebraska in the upcoming weeks, and then travel to the ‘Shoe on Nov. 19 and then to Camp Randall Stadium to play the Badgers on Nov. 26. Wisconsin hasn’t lost at Camp Randall since Oct. 17, 2009, and currently boasts a 14-game winning streak on its home field. If the Nittany Lions can survive that stretch and win 3-of-4 or even all of those games, they will be very deserving of a trip to Indianapolis in the first week of December for the conference championship game. For Penn State, a team that has been rotating quarterbacks all season, and lost to the only ranked team it faced — a 27-11 loss to Alabama on Sept. 10 — the Nits have their work cut out for them. After all of the turmoil that’s arisen this season for the Buckeyes, from the array of suspensions, to the quarterback controversy, to the blown lead at Nebraska, a little help from their other Big Ten teams and a clutch performance or two, OSU could have a chance to go to Indianapolis and compete for the Big Ten Title. Wisconsin senior quarterback Russell Wilson, junior running back Montee Ball and the rest of an angry Badgers team will have something to say about that, but with more than 100,000 fans behind them in the ‘Shoe next weekend, the Buckeyes will have an opportunity to shock the college football world. Kickoff for OSU’s Saturday game against Wisconsin is set for 8 p.m.
David Beckham has not been linked with small choices concerning who will coach Inter Miami, claims Fox Sports. The former England captain is linked to talks that claim he has had conversations with his former Real Madrid teammate, Zinedine Zidane, overtaking the coaching position of his newly found club in the US.Beckham has great plans for his Inter Miami, he wishes for the team to be a strong force in every competition. Already, he has a wish-list that is attractive, heading for one of the world’s current best managers.Zidane hails ‘quality’ James Rodriguez after Real Madrid’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane reserved special praise for James Rodriguez after his starring role in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Levante. The report states that according to Mirror, Beckham is already in talks with Zidane who added three consecutive Champions League titles to his name when he served as the manager of Real Madrid.Zidane is currently not appointed with any club and there is the possibility that if the inactive time stretches for him, the chances that he might strike a deal with his former teammate at Real Madrid increases. The twist in the incident is that Manchester United is also linked with Zidane should they no longer need the services of Jose Mourinho. This means Beckham may be facing a competition from another of his former club.
Raheem Sterling has revealed how he has evolved from trying to do fancy tricks and flicks into being a prolific goalscorer.Sterling, 23, has been in excellent form for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists.Sterling knows he needs to deliver in an England shirt as well but, at club level, he has lived up to the billing after bringing a new maturity and understanding to his game.Sterling told Daily Mirror: “The main thing now is to keep trying to be a goal threat.“When I was a bit younger, I wasn’t too interested in scoring goals, I was all about trying to look nice and show people I’ve got a lot of ability.Crouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“But now I’ve started to realise that no one remembers the fancy stuff you do on the pitch, it’s about the effectiveness and what you do for your team.“As I’m growing and developing, I understand that now, especially with the national team because I need to get these goals going.“I think I’m probably more driven now to be able to get on the end of things, being in the box a lot more.“Before, I was going wide, trying to beat a player and now I’m trying to get on the end of stuff, being around for scraps and trying to make goals for myself.“I’m much more confident when I’m in and around the penalty area now so I feel the goals will come for England as they have been doing for City.”
