Research Finds Text-Messaging Improves Children’s Spelling Skills

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Teens’ text-messaging habits are legion. They send thousands upon thousands of texts per month, and every once in a while, some unfortunate parents make the headlines when they get a bill in the mail for thousands upon thousands of dollars in texting charges. The increasing use of text-messaging by teens – and increasingly often, by younger children – has given some people cause for concern. They argue that the abbreviations used in texting are detrimental to literacy development. Spelling, grammar, phrasing – these are all somehow poised to suffer, critics of texting contend, because of the use of shortened words and sentences. Soon, they predict, students’ essays will be filled with LOLs and L8Rs.But a new study from Coventry University finds no evidence that having access to mobile phones harms children’s literacy skills. In fact, the research suggests that texting abbreviations or “textisms” may actually aid reading, writing and spelling skills. The research, set to be published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning next month, examined the impact of text-messaging on 9- and 10-year-olds. The study recruited 114 children for the study, none of whom had previously used a mobile phone. Half of the group were given access to a mobile phone. Better Spelling Through Texting?Based on a series of reading and spelling tests, researchers found a “significant contribution of textism use to the children’s spelling development during the study.” The study made it clear that it wasn’t the access to the phone per se, or even the text-messaging as much as specifically the use of textisms that aided the development. The reason, writes Dr. Clare Wood, one of the authors of the study, “is partly explained by the highly phonetic nature of the textisms that are popular within this age group, as the phonological and alphabetic awareness that is required for the construction and decoding of these textisms also underpin successful reading development.”It’s also possible, the researchers add, that textisms add value because they are “another way in which students are exposed to print outside of school.” And while sure, it’s not the same as having students exposed to “great works of literature” on the weekends, it looks like texting is a good influence nonetheless. first_imgBrighton boss Hughton: Dunk return key to Everton winby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveBrighton boss Chris Hughton was happy to have Lewis Dunk back for their 1-0 win over Everton.Dunk returned to keep a clean sheet alongside Shane Duffy in the heart of defence, and Hughton was pleased to see the pair rekindle their successful partnership.“It’s important because they know each other very well, and that’s not taking anything away from Leon Balogun, who’s played well in the last few games for us.“But they’re a partnership that know each other very well, and they had to deal with a fair bit of pressure towards the end of the game.“It’s been a good year for us. We’re on the back of two really good performances, both at home against two very good teams.“That puts us in good stead, but we now go through a difficult away game on Wednesday and we’ll have to show a lot of what we’ve showed over the last two games.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Gerrard satisfied with first Rangers win

first_imgSteven Gerrard was left satisfied with Rangers’ 2-0 win over FK Shkupi in a Europa League qualifier, but insisted that they have still got “a lot of work to do” ahead of the second legThe Ibrox side put in a controlled display in their first qualifying round tie with a Jamie Murphy first-half goal and James Tavernier’s penalty in the latter stages of the game securing Gerrard a 2-0 win in his first ever competitive game in charge at senior level. While pleased to have got a critical clean sheet, Gerrard was left to rue the missed opportunities Rangers had.“I think there are a lot of positives to take from the game,” he told Rangers TV, via Sky Sports.“We’ve won it, got a clean sheet, I thought we defended really well.“We got the second goal in the end but one concern would be that we didn’t win the game a lot more comfortably and put the whole tie to bed tonight. I thought we created enough to win more convincingly so we’re still in a tie, we’re still in a game and there is still a lot of work to do.”Steven Gerrard, Michael OwenOwen reveals why Liverpool didn’t offer Gerrard a new contract Manuel R. Medina – September 6, 2019 According to Owen, the Reds wanted to sell Gerrard two years before he left the club and that’s why they didn’t offer him a contract renewal. The clean sheet is a big advantage heading into the return leg at Macedonia.“I think the clean sheet is very important and it was nice to get a bit of relief with the second goal,” added Gerrard.“I don’t think we can create any of the players’ effort or commitment or application tonight, I thought they gave it everything and the fans stayed with them all the way through so I’m very pleased about a lot of it. The only thing is we didn’t win the game more convincingly.“We controlled a lot of it, most of it, we were a bit careless at times in a few moments but it’s the first real game and people are trying to over-impress, people are a bit tense and are still searching for that full sharpness and full fitness. All in all though, yes, I’m satisfied.“We all have to look forward to Tuesday and realise that we’re still in a game, it’s not over and there is still a lot of work to do.”last_img read more
